Ask Anything

Cast of Characters: Mabel the Cow, Baabara the Sheep, a Muppet named Mercy Mee, a Muppet named Milo Yo

Bible Reference: John 14:12 – 14

Mercy Mee: Okay, now where is that verse? It’s one of the best verses in the Bible. This is going to totally change my life! If I can just find it. (Looking through the Bible.) Where is it? I can’t find it anywhere!

Milo Yo: (Enters and watches Mercy for a while.) Hiya Mercy. Whatcha doing?

Mercy: (Exasperated) I am looking for something. It’s gonna make me incredibly rich! It’s gonna make me incredibly happy!

Milo: (Unimpressed.) Wow. Both those things at once, huh? Are you sure that’s possible?

Mercy: (Dramatically…) Milo, with God ALL things are possible.

Milo: So you are looking up a Bible verse that is going to make you incredibly rich and incredibly happy?

Mercy: That’s right! Now if I could just find that verse. It goes something like, “Anything you ask for, BAM, you got it!”

Milo: I haven’t heard that Bible verse before…

Mabel: (Popping up suddenly, startling Mercy and Milo) John 14:13 – 14; “You can ask for anything in my name and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father. Yes, ask anything in my name and I will do it!”

Milo: What in the world was that?

Mercy: Oh that was the Holy Cow.

Milo: Holy Cow?!

Mercy: Yeah, that was just Mabel, the Holy Cow. She really knows her Bible. And that was the verse I was looking for! Did you hear what it said?

Milo: Yes, I heard it: “Ask anything in my name, and I will do it!” But, Mercy, I’m not sure it means what you think it means.

Mercy: Of course I understand what it means. I can ask Jesus for anything, and he will have to give it to me, because he promised!

Mabel and Baabara: (both pop up together, saying loudly:) John 14, verse 12; “The truth is, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.”

Milo: Holy cow! You guys startled me.

Mabel: I thought that you both needed to hear the verse that came before.

Baabara: Yeah. You humans are always taking Bible verses out of context so you can hear only what you want to hear.

Mercy: Hey, I don’t have to have a bunch of animals teaching me how to interpret the Bible. It’s pretty clear to me: Jesus said, “Ask anything in my name and I will do it.”

Milo: But Mercy, you’ve skipped over a lot of verbs and important words.

Mercy: Oh, so now you’re my English teacher?

Baabara: Believes…

Mabel: Do… (spoken with a drawn out sound… dooooo, like mooooo)

Baabara: Works…

Mabel: Doooooo….

Baabara: Glory…

Mabel: Doooooo….

Mercy: DO you MIND? I don’t want to have to work or doooo anything. I want to ask and GET.

Milo: That’s the problem, Mercy. These verses are not about getting, they are about doing. Jesus is explaining to his followers that they will DO great things with Jesus’ help. And when you do great things, then it will bring glory to God.

Mabel and Baabara: “You can ask for anything in my name and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father.”

Milo: The rewards of doing great things for the kingdom of God are so much greater than just money or things. When your life is over, can you take all of your stuff or your money with you? Does it last?

Mercy: No I guess not. It really doesn’t matter how much money you have when you die.

Milo: But the things that we do with the help of Jesus, in the name of Jesus… acts of love… those are the things that last.

Mabel: “You can ask for anything…”

Mabel and Baabara: (Loudly) “… IN MY NAME …”

Mercy: I guess I wasn’t planning on asking in Jesus’ name; I was planning on asking in my name.

Milo: What sorts of things could we ask for in Jesus’ name?

Mercy: Well, those would have to be important things… things that we could do with God’s help… we should start writing down some ideas. What should we ask for?

Milo: World peace.

Mercy: Food for everyone.

Milo: Safe cities.

Mercy: Loving families.

Baabara: Animal rights.

Mabel: Warm hands!

All: Warm hands?

Mabel: Have you ever been milked in the winter?

All: Ooooohh. Warm hands…

Milo: Those are things that we can ask for in Jesus’ name…

Mercy: And God will help us to do all of those things.

Mabel: “Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works…”

Milo: The cow is so right.

Mabel: It’s black and white.

Milo: With God’s help…

All: (shouting)… we can change the world!

Mercy: Well, let’s get MOOOOOVING!

(Puppet show may be followed with a discussion of what we can do on the local and global level, or it could also be followed with an active worship song, such as, “Every Move I Make I Make in You Jesus” by Out of Eden.)

Note: Google the title to find sample videos and song samples.
